In the event of your death or incapacity, don't let your family end up scavenging through old pieces of mail to determine where you bank, where to pay your mortgage, and whether you have insurance coverage, among a long list of other possible items.
They'll need access to these items to take care of you (and any minor children), or to distribute assets to your heirs in a suitable manner if you've died.
If you've not done any planning, or you've worked with an attorney - but one who wasn't trained to help parents, it is very likely, that your family's scavenger hunt will end in probate court.
